About Asa

As a teenager in the ’90s, I discovered my two passions: writing and witchcraft.

I grew up in Orange County, California, a land known for sterile lawns, political conservatism, and Evangelical Christianity. It wasn’t the kind of place that you’d think would nurture witchcraft, but after discovering a book on the occult in a cozy little bookstore, I started seeing wild magic all around me. A lot of that magic was in the natural world—the weedy, untamed spaces in between the lawns—but some of it was onscreen, too. As a teenager, I fell in love with films and TV shows like The Craft and Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and they helped me find my way towards authentic witchcraft.

After getting an MFA in fiction writing from the Iowa Writers’ Workshop, I returned to Southern California, moving to my birthplace of Los Angeles. Here in LA, I read tarot professionally, teach occasional classes on witchcraft, and learn everything I can about the natural landscape and the creatures who call it home. In my free time, I love watercolor painting, printmaking, spinning and weaving, and spending time with my lovable husband and two amazing daughters.

I’m the author of Witch Blood Rising: Awaken Your Magic in a Modern World; Five Principles of Green Witchcraft; and The Witch’s Kin: Deepening Your Relationship With Nature, Spirit, and Humankind.

My writings on witchcraft has appeared in The Offing, Luna Luna MagazineWitches and Pagans Magazine, Elephant Journal, Gods and Radicals, and other outlets. I’ve also published fiction in Joyland Magazine and The Quiet Ones. I work as an entertainment journalist under my legal name, Julia Glassman.

Feel free to check out my books, book a tarot reading, or ask me a question! You can also find me on Instagram and Bluesky.
